Time to update this ABOUT page, I think… Not sure if anybody reads them really, but here it is.
This blog is basically a simple collection of thoughts and rambling reviews on RPGing. My era was what I like to think of as the golden era of RPGing, c. 1984-1989. Although this era was basically the second generation of gamers, I think it represented a time when stupid-sided dice, DM screens and spotty boys reached a critical mass and came close to crossing over into the mainstream. Certainly I can remember seeing a copy of the Fiend Folio in John Menzies at this time. Okay, we weren’t there at the dawn of the hobby and we with our gamebooks, spiky-bits miniatures and cringe-worthy D&D Cartoon probably were responsibly for it being relegated into the gheto of uncool pastimes together with train-spotting and stamp collecting, yet for a while it was the new nerdy avant garde, tame eroticism and had a certain Satanic kudos similar to what death metal had a few years later. I dare say in terms of numbers more might play today than then, but now it is just an established part of geek-culture.
I did play again in the mid-1990s, but the experience lacked the excitement and nervous energy of those heady days, when it was acceptable to propose the Houri as a character class for adolescents to play in a national magazine. I’ve never played since, but I’ve always kept one ear to the ground as while roleplaying rarely, if ever, matched its potential or my expectations, its importance in those pivotal years of my life, between the age of 12 and 17, can’t be denied. In some ways I’d like to play again, but in reality I know it’ll never happen. But, I’m still interested, in theory if not in practice and as I trawl through my old games, flogging some on eBay, flipping through others and stashing them back in the boxes from where they have lain for the last decade or so, thoughts and observations, both old and new appear in my mind from which this blog sprouted… It’s lain fallow for two years, but again I find myself tempted to fire off some posts and see what happens.
Today, there’s the ideological divide of old skool/new skool, sandbox vs storytelling, which mirrors the same discussions found in the letter pages in my day. Interesting stuff, which draws me in. I think there’s something to be said for both approaches and don’t see them as being mutually exclusive.
Anyway, some more rambling and opinionated reviews will commence. Opinions and comments are welcome.

Don;t know how long ago you wrote it but THANKS! Obviously I don;t agree with EVERYTHING you say but that’s just preferences. It was clear and extremely flattering.

But in my experience more traffic flows through comment posts than blogrolls, as in truth, no one ever explores a blogroll… I keep my blogroll for for my own reference to other interesting and related blogs for my own use rather than for others…

This is a standard statement for anyone who has published reviews etc. about Squadron UK on the internet:
In the early 1980’s I co-authored and published a Superhero Role-playing game called Golden Heroes. It was picked up and published by Games Workshop. It fell out of print.
Many years later, I discovered fans of the game on the internet. I thought our contract with GW allowed the rights to revert if the game was out of print for a set period. So I wrote to GW about my intention to produce a new version of the game. Hearing nothing, I went ahead and published Squadron UK (first edition).
After a couple of years I contacted GW again about using the original GH name. Eventually a representative of their legal department responded by pointing out that the original contract made GH their Intellectual Property in perpetuity. In addition, they asked me to stop selling Squadron UK as they felt that impacted on the same IP.
I can’t afford to buy back GH or investigate legal avenues. I also have no ill will towards GW. Given the way some people across the world are blatantly infringing their IP, I don’t blame them in being protective. And their legal department are just doing their job.
So I feel my best route is to develop a totally new game – informed by the same aesthetic as the original GH rules but addressing some of the issues which arose with that game over the years. Called Squadron UK (2nd edition) I am currently play-testing it across Midland Games Conventions and have issued a set of rules to select group of fans/players for beta-testing.
I hope to have my first product using the new rules out by November. This will not be a “classic” SHRPG rulebook. That’s slated for early 2013. The first product will be a stand-alone game with a specific campaign setting similar to the “Finest Hour” pack I produced for Squadron UK first edition.
In the meantime I’m left with hundreds of references across the internet linking SqUK to GH which is embarrassing because I shouldn’t have done that.

I’ve been wondering what happened to SqUk & the brilliant Finest Hour.. Now I know!
Well, I don’t take the news of GW attitude kindly – I have to say that I’m very pleased to hear that Finest Hour will be seeing the light of day again.
Please keep me informed of any developments. If there is any way for people to get on mailing lists, a FH blog or whatever then I’ll e nly too happy to print it here. While I’m not a current gamer I’d be happy to cast my eye over any beta edition you may have, as I have a fairly good eye for potential broken rules, etc… And if nothing else, I’m damned curious too!
